When we go through something overwhelming, unwanted and out of our control — whether emotional, physical, or psychological — the nervous system immediately shifts into survival mode. This is automatic. It is your body protecting you.

Muscles tighten. Breathing becomes shallow and rapid. Heart rate increases. Digestion slows down. Sleep becomes difficult. The brain may even begin to dissociate or remain hypervigilant long after the traumatic event has passed.

And the part that hurts your health long term is that trauma decreases your neuroplasticity.  The brain is literally changed from trauma, and the way it works is more reactive.  Trauma creates tight neuronal pathways that trigger more easily and follow a repetitive loop — this is helpful during trauma, as it takes less to trigger it and so you pick up on threats more easily, and then the automated brainstem response gets you out of danger faster.

Afterwards, this tight neuronal loop that doesn’t leave time for more relaxed processing and additional optional reactions and solutions… this equals prolonged wear and tear on your body.

So it’s a tight loop in your brain, and prolonged wear and tear on your body.  And it can stay that way for the rest of your life if you don’t break those patterns and increase your neuroplasticity again.  That’s what frees your body and allows your physical health to return.

When the brain stays in these tight reactive pathways, they become long term coping mechanisms, which then never allow you to release back into flexablity, adaptability and health.

This is why trauma can continue affecting health years later.  If the brain is not flexible and adaptable, then the body suffers. The nervous system remains stuck in survival physiology:

  • Cortisol stays elevated
  • Inflammation stays high
  • Sleep stays disrupted
  • Muscles remain chronically tense
  • Digestion struggles
  • Flashbacks and anxiety can make the body feel as though it is reliving the trauma again and again.

Grounding interrupts and helps reverse that cycle.  It’s the only healing modality that directly reverses the effect trauma has on both the body and the brain. All other healing modalities attempt to support one part of the trauma — cognitive behavioral therapy, talk therapy, hypnosis, EMDT, Trauma Release exercises, medications to help with sleep or anxiety or depression or panic — all work by addressing one aspect of trauma, but never full resolve the entire issue, which is the decrease in neuroplasticity and the tight reactive loops that won’t reverse, with resultant wear and tear on the body over time.

Grounding shifts the autonomic nervous system in the opposite direction: away from survival and into healing, and starts restoring neuroplasticity.  Restoring options. Restoring health.

What you are left with is is resiliency, and triumph… not trauma.

That’s the goal.

In my clinical experience, grounding is the quickest, most effective, and most permanent way to release trauma and protect your long term health from the effects of traumatic experiences. Medical studies have shown that grounding can help regulate cortisol patterns, improve heart rate variability, deepen breathing, reduce muscle tension, decrease inflammation, and support better sleep — all of which are essential for trauma recovery.

But on top of that, grounding also helps reorient the brain into the present moment. Research exploring Earth’s electromagnetic frequencies and the brain suggests synchrony between natural Earth rhythms and areas of the brain involved in orientation, meaning, and awareness of time and place.

This matters deeply for trauma survivors.

Trauma traps the nervous system in the past.  The body continues reacting as though the danger is still happening. Grounding helps reconnect awareness to the here and now — reminding the nervous system that the event has passed and that safety is possible again and that we can allow different responses other than our trauma response.

Healing from trauma is not about becoming the person you were before.

It is about learning how to safely inhabit the person you are now.

Grounding supports that process by helping the body feel supported, regulated, connected, and present again.

And over time, this shift reverses the long-term physiological consequences of chronic stress and trauma exposure, including inflammatory burden, circadian disruption, and stress-related epigenetic changes.

Even a few seconds of grounding can help calm the nervous system during moments of panic, dissociation, anxiety, or overwhelm. And practiced consistently over time, grounding teaches the body that it is safe to heal.

There are many wonderful tools for trauma healing.

Therapy.
Breathwork.
Meditation.
Biofeedback.
Somatic work.
Mindfulness practices.

All of these can be profoundly healing.

But grounding offers an additional advantage during acute stress because it does not rely on cognitive control.  During trauma or panic, people are not always able to “think their way” into calm. Sometimes the nervous system becomes too activated. Too flooded. Too overwhelmed.

Breathing techniques may feel difficult.
Meditation may feel inaccessible.
Logical thinking may temporarily go offline.

But grounding can still happen. You can still touch the Earth. Even during panic. Even during overwhelm. Even during emotional collapse. Even when you feel numb.  Even when you are exhausted.  Even when you are disassociated or disconnected.

And because grounding works physiologically through the body itself, the nervous system can begin calming even before the mind fully catches up.  That is one of the reasons grounding can feel so immediate and stabilizing during moments of acute stress or trauma activation.

And over time, repeated experiences of physiological safety begin teaching the body something incredibly important:

It is possible to relax into your body again.  It’s possible for the brain to regain it’s flexibility and neuronal plasticity.  You release the coping mechanism of disassociation and hyper-vigilance.

Next week I am launching a five month program to restore your health from head to toe, through grounding.

This is an incredible amount of support — directly from me — week after week, month after month, for nearly a half a year.

To get the same level of support from me, you would need to book weekly 90 minute consultations with me for the next 5 months… or you can simply join me here:

I will personally guide you through a healing program that will re-program your health, I will personally answer every question you have live in class, and even better than a 90 minute weekly consultation for several months, you also get to be part of a grounding online group,  I will meet you daily to answer any additional questions that come up throughout the week.

We start September 9th and run all the way through February of next year, so that by spring time, your health has reached a better platform than it’s felt in years… maybe ever.

Because it’s absolutely possible to be in trauma since birth — your entire life — and still heal, decades later as an adult.

I’ll get you there.  Join me here:

And just to be clear, this course isn’t just for trauma healing.

Anyone can join who would like to up level their health, learn more about grounding than their own physician actually knows, and even use grounding to support the health of everyone they love — from kids and grandkids, to partners, pets, even their own customers, clients and patients in a health care setting.

This course is for everyone.

Let’s heal collectively and uplevel the health of everyone you care about. Send them this link to reserve their spot today, taking the class with a loved one or friend adds another level of encouragement and fun:
