Thoughts On Health… Cosmetics

Clara takes a few pictures of me plucking my eyebrows… and plucking my brows to open up the eye area is my favorite “beauty secret” by far! Although there are many types of preservatives and artificial colors and scents in make up that I’d prefer to avoid, I don’t have any set rules. I prefer not to use formulas with parabens in them, or petroleum products… but at the same time, I have a huge amount of respect for the human body and it’s ability to take in what is wanted, and filter out and excrete what is not. Yep, […]

Skin Care, Part II

Thank you so much for such a great discussion about skin care last Monday. I appreciated the comments and the suggestions and insight from readers so much! Wendy gave a great tip to avoid using citrus essential oils on the skin (it increases photosensitivity) and Barbara had a great recommendation for all you locals wanting microdermabrasion (Dawn at Daniel Island Medical Spa) and there are even more great tips if you want to take a look. I don’t have any recent skin-care-related photos to share with this post today, so I thought I’d include some new pics of my wire

Thoughts On Health… FAQ: Skin Care

This past week I was asked by three different folks about skin care, so I think this topic is calling for me to blog about it! My motto is: simplify. Let me back up and tell you a little about my background… I briefly considered going into Dermatology when I was in med school, so I took three times the regular amount of training in Dermatology as a result. I’ve always been fascinated by skin and surgical procedures, so I really enjoyed those rotations, chock full of both. I also spent four summers throughout college working at the National Cancer

My New Head of Hair!

Okay, so it isn’t that much different. But do you remember when I was in a funk with my hair and begged you fine folks for some ideas? I loved the feedback and thought about it long and hard. And the one thing I hadn’t done yet was Henna — thanks for the suggestion, Aleka! So I went for it. And I love it. I can definitely give henna a double thumbs up. I don’t know why I had never tried it before… it’s seems like a no-brainer for someone who loves to keep things natural… basically it’s like a

Through my daughter’s eyes…

My daughter surprised me recently… She picked up my camera, and took pictures of me. Finally at the *other* end of the camera, the object of focus, I felt so loved. It really touched my heart. I’m not used to someone focusing on me… and I don’t say that in a way that demands sympathy. I LOVE being the caretaker… I LOVE being the support behind my family. I love watching my husband shine at work, my kids dance gloriously through life… I cherish it and nothing fulfills me more. But having my daughter focus the lens on me, hearing

Thoughts On Health…. Thyroid

“When you take charge of your life, there is no longer need to ask permission of other people or society at large.” -Albert F. Geoffrey Our thyroids do so much for us. The thyroid is one of the main centers of control in our body… we have so many parts that help coordinate and regulate our organism as a whole… the brain, the heart, the pineal gland, the thyroid… all of these organs work for our entire body… maintaining the health of our body as a complete organism. Unlike the big toe, who is maintaining health for itself, the big

Thoughts on Health… Loving my Daughter, Loving Myself

These preteen years are uncharted waters for me as a parent. I find that they bring up lots of intense emotions for me, and I wonder why. I am finding that loving my daughter, truly loving her, even in her angry pre-teen moments when she thinks she isn’t lovable, brings me a deep satisfaction and often moves me to tears. Don’t get me wrong… when I speak of my daughter being emotional I’m talking about a 15 minute spell of her feeling irritable and stand-offish… understandable when I take a look at her pre-teen body and all the changes that
