Thoughts On Health… Dry Cleaning

My poor sweet husband. He goes to work with the most wrinkled shirts on earth. In the early years of our marriage, we used to dry clean his shirts. This is because I refuse to iron. I just won’t do it. We have one, but this is the only time it gets used: when my kids want to make treasure maps.   My daughter using the iron to create her treasure map! I haven’t touched the thing in years…   Otherwise, it gets no play at all. I have a steamer too, and that is a great option for […]

Thoughts On Health… my fav water filter

You all know how I feel about fluoride. I’ve blogged here about why I avoid it in my toothpaste and why I don’t really want to be drinking it, either. In fact, as I get older and have passed the age of peak bone density (and anyone who is over the age of 30 has) I want to preserve bone mass more than ever. I really think it is important that I avoid fluoride altogether (and soy too.) Alas, this is impossible. If you eat food grown from the earth, you consume fluoride. Thanks to the government mass medicating

Thoughts on Health… clinical evidence that seriousness affects your body

This is part two in my series called “Seriousness is a Disease.” There is ample evidence in the medical literature that a prolonged serious attitude causes damage and aging to our bodies. The longer I live the more I realize that when I approach life with a serious or overly intense, analytical mindframe instead of a forgiving, playful, loving, joyful one… the more I see the effects of seriousness show up physically in my body. Seriousness literally ages our very being. In part 1, I discuss the evidence that seriousness affects the brain. In part 2, today, I show the

Thoughts on Health… Toothpaste.

To use fluoride toothpaste or not… that is the question. Well, if that is the question, here is my answer… we don’t.   If you do a web search on fluoride, you’ll find a million and one articles ranging from rants on fluoride being rat poison to being responsible for causing sudden death in the dentist’s chair. Reading through those articles is almost enough to make me dismiss anti-fluoride claims all together and return to the *safety* of fluoride toothpaste. Almost.   Because after going through great pains to weed through the inflammatory and hyper-fear-based information out there on fluoride,

Thoughts On Health: A New Hazard of Cell Phone Use

This the third blog post I’ve done regarding non-ionizing radiation and it’s effects on us. With new articles (like this one, in the New York Times) constantly alerting the public of possible hazards to cell phone use, I wanted to give my readers the very latest thinking in the cell phone debate. The first blog post, discussing how cell phones may abnormally effect glucose metabolism in our brains on the side that the user holds the cell phone, introduced one possible explanation for the cell phone/brain tumor link that has been suggested in several studies. The second post, discussing the

Thoughts On Health… Microwaving

This post could also be called Part Two of the post I wrote explaining the recent findings of cell phones disturbing brain metabolism. What do cell phones and the microwave have in common? Let me start at the beginning. We don’t use a microwave at all. We haven’t in several years… and yes, I understand that microwaving uses non-ionizing radiation, just like the non-ionizing radiation in light, TV, radio waves, etc… Most folks feel okay using a microwave once they figure out that it is not the same as the ionizing radiation in X-rays, nuclear radiation, etc… For us, it’s

FAQ: Our Natural Transition to Vegetarian…

I have been asked four times in the past two weeks about my thoughts on food choices for children, so I figured this is the Universe asking me to blog about it 🙂 Concerned parents were wondering if they should be forcing their children to eat a certain amount of veggies each day, and yet other parents were concerned that their children may not be getting enough meat. I’ve thought long and hard about what I believe. I’ve considered everything I know from my education as a physician and everything I *feel* as an intuitive mother, and I have developed
