A Healing Prayer For You

My daughter is 12. She is unique and wonderful and spiritual and wise. Instead of playing around with make up and talking on the phone and rolling her eyes if I ask her to put away her clothes, like I did at her age, she writes novels and reads historical fiction and studies religion and creates beautiful things with her pen, drawings and artwork and prayers.   Like this prayer.   She wrote this and from the first moment I read it, I knew I wanted to incorporate this prayer into my work with my own patients.   Now, it …

Empowered Birth Awareness, save the date!

I was watching Good Luck Charlie the other evening with my daughter on The Disney Channel, and the mother of the sitcom went into labor as part of the plot line. As predicted, the following scenes were full of screaming and panic. I leaned over to my daughter and told her, like I have many many times before, that real birth is not like this. That giving birth to a baby is one of the most natural things we do as women, in fact, it is the reason that human being have survived on this planet in the first place! …

Thoughts On Health… Celebrate Becoming A Woman

The most special girl in the world, the most special girl in *my* world anyway… is now a young woman. She takes my breath away with how effortlessly she welcomed womanhood and menstruation into her life… she is healthy and radiant and I am the most lucky mama in the entire UNIVERSE to travel this road with her… watching her fly. We were heading out the door to spend a warm November day on the beach when she found out. Welcoming her transition with the calmly lapping waves and under the warm blessed sun just felt so right. Oh I …

Changes the world with each breath…

… that’s my daughter. Intense yet gentle… deep yet easy going… wise yet playful. She is turning 10 tomorrow. She saved my life one day, you know. The day she was born. Literally saved my life. Changed me into the person I always wanted to be… loving, nurturing, full of faith and aware of spirit. Never was able to reach for those things before she came into our lives, and now each day is bathed in spirit and soul, love and faith, tenderness and fun. Thank you so much for blessing us with your life these past 10 …

What I Have In Common With A Cockatiel (hint… we both have a favorite girl, and she turns 9 today!)

See this guy? He is our Cockatiel, Cupcake. We love him so much. And he loves us too… but Clara in particular. One thing I love most about cockatiels, is that they bond for life. Just one life partner that they stay with through thick and thin. If the bond is broken, their heart breaks too. Cupcake has bonded for life with my Clara. She is the only one in the world for him… he is utterly and completely in love with her. I can understand why. Clara is the most magical human being I have ever met. In my …

My Favorite Thing… In My Daughter’s Room

My daughter is going to be turning 9 in two weeks… 9! Almost to the double digits, but luckily I get one more year before I have to face that. What she wants most this year is to re-do her bedroom… making it earthy and organic and painting the walls light brown, putting up a huge mural of a tree on one wall and a big fluffy bean bag chair in the corner. So, in preparation for her new room, I’m painting it this week. She picked the color… it’s Interactive Cream from Sherwin Williams, low-VOC paint. I was pushing …

Thoughts on Health… Loving my Daughter, Loving Myself

These preteen years are uncharted waters for me as a parent. I find that they bring up lots of intense emotions for me, and I wonder why. I am finding that loving my daughter, truly loving her, even in her angry pre-teen moments when she thinks she isn’t lovable, brings me a deep satisfaction and often moves me to tears. Don’t get me wrong… when I speak of my daughter being emotional I’m talking about a 15 minute spell of her feeling irritable and stand-offish… understandable when I take a look at her pre-teen body and all the changes that …
