Ideas Galore — holiday gifts that are meaningful, supportive… even free!

I’m often asked what my fav holiday gift ideas are…   …how I celebrate the joy of the season with my own family and what items I love and gift most around the holidays. It’s tempting to go for cutesy packaging and shiny sale signs in every window… and it’s also easy feel like we need to give in large quantity to adequately express our love to those closest to us… but that is simply not true. In my family, we each get four gifts. I’m sure you’ve heard this rhyme before — it’s something we truly take to heart: […]

Creativity = Health

In honor of the second chakra this week, I am sharing with you an article I once wrote for a feature on Art Snark’s blog many years ago. I still love it and it holds true! How The Simple Act Of Creating Must Create Physical Health I took the scenic route in becoming an artist. The really looooong way around. The kind of path that took me through medical school, residency, and a bit of clinical practice as a physician before I had children and realized my heartsong was to be a mommy and an artist. That kind of long

Quote Splat #1

There are hundreds of paths up the mountain all leading in the same direction, so it doesn’t matter which path you take. The only one wasting time is one who runs around and around the mountain, telling everyone that his or her path is wrong. – Hindu saying         Quote Splat is just for fun. I have been doing so much art for “work” that I hadn’t created much art for pure fun lately. I decided to take just a little bit of time each week to take one of my very favorite quotes, and throw it

My Temper Tantrum

  Okay, I know all the blah blah blah. I know it’s healthy for children to grow up and find their own rhythm and pull away from their parents a little and yadda yadda yadda. I know the reason my daughter feels so comfortable finding her way and asking for space is because I have loved her deeply and thoroughly, and I know that giving her a solid ground is why she is able to fly. Beautiful… usually. But once in a while, I just want to throw a big ol’ temper tantrum and say it like it is: I

New Beginnings

The past several nights have been near freezing temps and I wake to find a frosty lawn. It makes me worry that I put my seedlings out too early, so I go to check on how they have survived in their makeshift greenhouses. Walking out onto my front porch, I’m reminded that life doesn’t always run as smoothly as we hope. Not only have the temps been dipping below what I was anticipating, but the cover to one of my greenhouses has blown away in this passionate windy weather we’ve been having. Making do, by putting some saran wrap over
