Thoughts On Health… absolutely random thought for you today.

Hi peeps. I hope you had an awesome weekend. I have a totally random video for you today that I shot in about five minutes and got about 600 bug bites for… and I’m scratching them all raw right now. So give it a watch. If not for me, for my poor scabbed up arms and legs and a particularly raging swollen bite right on my chin. My epidermis and I thank you. xoxo, Laura

The number one question I hear from patients…

What do you do when your kids want to sled in the middle of winter, but you live in SC? Well, you grab an old cardboard box and head to your nearest hill, of course! It’s not exactly like sledding in snow, but it is still a ton of fun… and no frostbite!   What is the number one question I hear from my patients (and friends and family too?) It’s “How do you have all that energy?“ I don’t have any extra energy. I didn’t get any more than you did. I’m not a particularly young parent (I

Laughing At Myself

My kids recently asked me what was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me. Well, lots of them I had to censor for my kids… and don’t particularly want to share on the internet, either. But once I started really digging into the G rated stuff that I could share, I started laughing so hard with them, and it felt soooo good. Hearing them laugh along too just had me breathless with joy. I told them about the time when I was twelve and I was on a family trip with my parents and brothers. We

Thoughts on Health…. Chocolate for heart and brain health (yes, you heard me… chocolate!)

Wow, it is my complete pleasure and honor to bring you this tidbit of good news today, published recently in the British Medical Journal. Folks who consume chocolate often… we are talking every single day or even multiple times a day… have about a 40% reduced risk of heart attack and a 30% reduced risk of stroke. In fact, the patients who consumed the most chocolate had the most cardio and neurologic protection. About a third less risk of cardiovascular events and stroke combined attributed to chocolate intake. This was the finding of a huge, meta analysis looking at

Fav Quote #3

Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, But around in awareness. – James Thurber       I love this quote! One of my favorite quotes of all time, I wanted to capture it on paper and bring the meaning alive. This is my third quote splat… just a weekly series of fun, silly, low-key illustrations that I splat onto the page in just a few minutes, off the cuff, to accompany my favorite quotes. To illustrate the “looking back in anger” I painted the left side of the paper red and filled it up

Thoughts On Health… seasonal allergies and the link to stress.

Part 4 of my “Seriousness is a Disease” series, today I discuss how prolonged stress physically changes your mucosal membranes and leads to a hyper-allergic response. If you missed Part 1 (brain health) or Part 2 (heart health) or Part 3 (joint health) give them a listen and catch up to speed on why I fervently believe that seriousness is a disease. Seriousness causes physical change in our bodies that are as damaging as most other diseases out there. I believe that when we led our lives from an overly serious vantage point, it causes us to live in a

Thoughts On Health… Protect your joints by reaching for Joy!!!!

How is your attitude and your joint health related? In part three of this series, I focus once again on the physical changes that a prolonged serious attitude has on your body. Degenerative changes and age related change are accelerated under the conditions of an intensely focused and hyper serious habitual mindframe. Joy and wonder and playfulness is where it is at, folks, if you want to protect your brain, heart, joints… whole body… and stay younger longer. Let me explain to you how joints tie into this picture and what the clinical evidence is for this idea. If you
