Recipe: Organic Marinara Sauce from your backyard

Well, not exactly from *my* backyard… more like from my local farmer’s backyard. As you all know, the tomatoes in my own yard didn’t take off much this year. We had a lovely crop (and it’s still coming!) which gave us enough tomatoes for fresh salads and straight eating this summer, but not enough of a crop for me to can them into sauce. Knowing this, my hubby came home one night after work with three huge baskets full of local fresh tomatoes from John’s Island… Now if you are smarter than me, you will not begin to make […]

Guest post… Organic Make Up (or, what I use for my oily eyelids, but that just doesn’t sound right…)

Alison Price is stopping by my blog again today to tell us a little about why her make-up line is so awesome. She runs Organic Glow.com, which features the certified organic product range Miessence. I knew the products were awesome from the ingredient lists I’ve checked out… but I have to say, I’ve tried other mineral make ups and not fully enjoyed them. So I was a bit leary to try the loose powder, because I’ve had such bad experiences in the past with the powder settling into my expression lines and fine lines around my eyes… I usually wind

Tutorial: FREE, eco-friendly firepit starters!!! And a Garden Update…

I have a great tutorial for you today… the perfect thing to do outside, amidst your gorgeous summer garden? Nighttime fire pit! Nothing like a summer bonfire… under a full moon is even better! I love hotdogs and smores cooked in an outdoor firepit on those nights when I don’t even want to *think* about cooking. Add a sprinkler nearby, and you’ve got an instant summertime party. The best part is that the firestarters are free, or near free. I made about three dozen fire starters for exactly $0.00. Perfect! And reusing old containers before recycling them… priceless.   Ready

My Fav Toothpastes…

I love love love this toothpaste. It tastes like you dipped your toothbrush in baking soda, then squeezed a fresh lemon over the top. And that’s because that is pretty much the ingredient list on this pure, organic, high quality toothpaste. I love brushing with baking soda… washing your oral muscosa and teeth with baking soda is a fabulous way to re-set your mouth’s pH every morning and every evening… it is gentle on your teeth and neutralizing for breath, too.   I am also a big fan of just sprinkling your toothbrush with baking soda and brushing,

Thoughts on Health… Toothpaste.

To use fluoride toothpaste or not… that is the question. Well, if that is the question, here is my answer… we don’t.   If you do a web search on fluoride, you’ll find a million and one articles ranging from rants on fluoride being rat poison to being responsible for causing sudden death in the dentist’s chair. Reading through those articles is almost enough to make me dismiss anti-fluoride claims all together and return to the *safety* of fluoride toothpaste. Almost.   Because after going through great pains to weed through the inflammatory and hyper-fear-based information out there on fluoride,

Thoughts On Health… Microwaving

This post could also be called Part Two of the post I wrote explaining the recent findings of cell phones disturbing brain metabolism. What do cell phones and the microwave have in common? Let me start at the beginning. We don’t use a microwave at all. We haven’t in several years… and yes, I understand that microwaving uses non-ionizing radiation, just like the non-ionizing radiation in light, TV, radio waves, etc… Most folks feel okay using a microwave once they figure out that it is not the same as the ionizing radiation in X-rays, nuclear radiation, etc… For us, it’s
